Heatwave Grips England, Sparking Health Alerts

(MENAFN) Large portions of England are under heightened health alerts as a persistent heatwave continues to dominate the UK. On Monday, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) expanded its amber heat-health warning to additional regions as temperatures soared to 33 degrees Celsius—outpacing vacation hotspots like Mexico, Barbados, and Jamaica.

The Met Office predicts the extreme weather will persist through Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures potentially climbing to 34 or even 35 degrees Celsius in parts of central and eastern England. Should this happen, it would be only the fourth time since the 1930s that June temperatures have surpassed 34 degrees Celsius in Britain, although the all-time record of 35.6 degrees Celsius set in 1976 is unlikely to be broken.

"Temperatures are rising further today with low 30 Celsius widely across England," said Paul Gundersen, Met Office chief meteorologist. "These high temperatures and humid conditions will be quite uncomfortable for those working outside as well as people leaving Glastonbury and attending the start of Wimbledon and other outdoor events."

Sunday saw temperatures reach 31 degrees Celsius in parts of southeast England, but Tuesday is expected to be even hotter, with London and the southeast facing highs of 35 degrees Celsius, according to the Met Office.

As part of the Weather-Health Alert system, the amber warning indicates that weather conditions will likely strain the entire health service. The warning, which has been in effect since Friday, covers large areas of England and is expected to last until Tuesday. The UKHSA has cautioned that the extreme conditions could adversely affect health and social care services, with heightened risks for vulnerable groups, including elderly individuals and those with underlying health issues such as respiratory or cardiovascular diseases.
